That Time of the Year

AHT’s Risk and Insurance Benchmarking Report

by: Joe Gleason, AHT Director of International Risk Management

It’s that time of year again and I’m not talking about the winter holidays – though it is that time of year, too. No, of course I’m talking about AHT’s annual Risk and Insurance Benchmarking report. Chock full of data drawn from across the International NGO community, this benchmarking can help guide the reasonableness of measures being taken – a key tenant of meeting duty of care obligations.

As in past years, the 2023 survey includes information on insurance limits as well as trends in wider risk management, including:

  • Community insurance benchmarking data on key lines, such as Directors and Officers (D&O), Business Travel Accident, Management Liability, Crime and others.
  • How wrongful detention, property confiscation and other actions by unfriendly host governments have impacted NGOs along with the risk management, incident response and insurance best practices employed.
  • Myths and realities related to War Risk coverage for NGOs operating in conflict environments around the globe.

The report also includes a special insert from the international development and forensics experts at BDO. This insert uncovers crucial insights to equip organizations with the knowledge and strategies to combat fraud effectively, including how to implement robust internal controls, address emerging fraud trends, protect resources, and ensure the integrity of your organization’s mission.

How should organizations use this report and its nuggets of information? As with any benchmarking, the data is intended to guide informed decision making and not for dogmatic adherence. In evaluating how this data should influence insurance programs, organizations should consider a range of factors including: organizational risk tolerance, unique exposures, contractual or funder requirements and the legal/insurance landscape in program countries.

Enjoy this time of year – and by that I mean AHT’s Risk and Insurance Benchmarking report and the holidays!
