respondentia The lending of money on cargo being shipped overseas at a higher
rate of interest than otherwise, the difference to compensate
the lender for the provision that no repayment was expected if
the voyage failed. If the loan was on the vessel, the arrangement
was called bottomry. Thus, respondentia was an early form of cargo
insurance, and bottomry was an early form of hull insurance.
