points or surcharge points 1) When referring to motor vehicle reports (MVRs), it is a grading
system assigned by each state, where points are assessed against
a driver based upon a combination of the number of violations
and the degree of seriousness of those violations. When a specified
point total is reached or exceeded within a stated period of time,
the suspension of the driver's license usually results.
2) With respect to automated underwriting systems (AUS), it usually
refers to deficiency points assessed against a risk being run
through the system. When a specified number of points accumulate,
the risk either receives a rating surcharge, is declined, or triggers
a manual review of the account by an actual underwriter.
