fire mark In days gone by (and before public fire departments were created),
a small sign or a medallion placed on a building by a fire insurance
company which had insured it, to direct its privately contracted
fire department to extinguish the blaze. All such departments
would respond to a fire alarm, but only the department compensated
by the fire mark company would fight the fire. Fire marks are
now collectors' items.
